West County commute guide

Where to Live if You Work in West County St. Louis

West County is a big employment geography, not one office park. Creve Coeur, Chesterfield, Des Peres and the I-270 / I-64 / Olive corridors can pull a housing search in different directions.

What changes the search

Start with the exact work corridor.

Creve Coeur is a major job center

Creve Coeur’s 2024 financial report lists Mercy Hospital St. Louis and Bayer among its largest employers, alongside Barnes West and major financial/professional employers.

Chesterfield has its own employment base

The City of Chesterfield says more than 42,000 employees work in the community across more than 2,000 businesses.

The exact corridor matters

A job near Olive and I-270 is a different commute from a job near Chesterfield Valley, Spirit of St. Louis Airport or Manchester Road.

Three ways to solve it

Choose how much of the move should revolve around work.

I want the shortest practical drive

Start close to the work corridor: Creve Coeur, Town and Country, Des Peres, Chesterfield or Maryland Heights depending on the actual office.

I want a more central St. Louis life

Richmond Heights, Brentwood, Kirkwood, Webster Groves and University City can keep West County reachable while shortening trips toward Clayton, Cortex, the medical campus and the city.

I want more house or land farther west

Ballwin, Ellisville, Wildwood and western Chesterfield can widen the housing choices. Make sure the extra house is worth the added drive to everything east of work.

Places worth comparing

Six different housing directions.

If you’re scouting in person

A better visit plan.

1

Get the exact office address before looking at houses. “West County” is too broad to plan a commute.

2

Drive one close-to-work option and one more-central option at the time you would actually commute.

3

Do one evening trip east toward the places you would use after work; the commute home is only part of the week.

4

If you are considering Ballwin, Ellisville or Wildwood, test Manchester Road / Clarkson / I-64 access from the exact neighborhood.

Three mistakes I’d avoid.

1

Treating every West County job as an I-64 commute.

2

Moving as far west as the housing budget allows without measuring the rest of the week.

3

Choosing by municipality name instead of the exact office and exact home routes.

Common questions

Before you choose the house.

What communities are closest to West County jobs?

Creve Coeur, Des Peres, Town and Country, Chesterfield and Maryland Heights are common starting points, but the right answer depends on whether the job is near Olive, I-270, I-64, Chesterfield Valley or another corridor.

Can I live closer to the city and commute to West County?

Yes. Richmond Heights, Brentwood, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, University City and other central communities can make sense if you value access to the rest of the metro enough to accept a westbound commute.

Is St. Charles County reasonable for a West County job?

Sometimes. Chesterfield and western West County jobs can pair reasonably with parts of St. Charles County, but the Missouri River crossing and the rest of your weekly geography should be tested.

What if my partner works downtown or in Clayton?

That usually increases the value of a central compromise such as Richmond Heights, Brentwood, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Creve Coeur or Maryland Heights depending on both job locations.
