Relocating for work

Moving to St. Louis for SSM Health

SSM Health is one of the clearest examples of why employer name alone is not enough. Its St. Louis-area hospitals span the city, Bridgeton, Fenton, St. Charles, Lake Saint Louis and Wentzville.

Work location

Start with the exact worksite.

City medical campuses

SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon are on South Grand, while St. Mary’s is on Clayton Road.

County hospitals

SSM Health DePaul is in Bridgeton and St. Clare is in Fenton.

St. Charles County hospitals

SSM operates St. Joseph facilities in St. Charles, Lake Saint Louis and Wentzville.

Where to start

Compare the commute with the rest of your week.

1

First: confirm the exact SSM hospital

An SSM role at SLU Hospital creates a central-city search. DePaul pulls northwest. St. Clare pulls southwest. St. Joseph in Wentzville creates an entirely different map. Do not search “near SSM” until you know the facility.

2

If the job is in the city medical corridor

Shaw, Tower Grove South, Lafayette Square, Central West End, Forest Park Southeast, Maplewood and Richmond Heights create very different versions of a relatively short central commute.

3

If the job is outside the city

Bridgeton/DePaul points toward Bridgeton, Maryland Heights, Hazelwood and nearby central County. Fenton/St. Clare points toward Fenton, Sunset Hills, Valley Park, Kirkwood and southwest County. St. Charles County hospitals make local county options much more natural.

Three options

With SSM, the hospital name matters more than the system name.

SLU Hospital / Cardinal Glennon

Shaw, Tower Grove South, Lafayette Square, Forest Park Southeast and Central West End keep the city medical corridor close.

St. Mary’s / DePaul / St. Clare

St. Mary’s points toward Richmond Heights, Maplewood and central County; DePaul points northwest toward Bridgeton/Maryland Heights; St. Clare points southwest toward Fenton/Sunset Hills/Valley Park.

St. Joseph facilities in St. Charles County

St. Charles, Lake Saint Louis and Wentzville each create a very different local housing map. Confirm the hospital before choosing a side of the river.

SSM is one of the strongest cases for confirming the facility before you buy

Because the SSM footprint spans the city, county and St. Charles County, buying before the worksite is settled can create an avoidable commute. Renting first is most valuable when the facility, rotation pattern or long-term assignment is not yet fixed.

If two people are commuting

SSM’s wide footprint makes the second worker’s job especially important. A central-city SSM job plus a West County partner can point toward Richmond Heights or Maplewood, while a St. Joseph Wentzville job can make O’Fallon or St. Peters a much better compromise.

Scouting trip

A one-day plan.

1

Get the exact hospital and department before touring homes.

2

Drive from at least two housing areas to the employee entrance at your real shift time.

3

If the role can rotate between sites, drive the two most likely facility routes before choosing a neighborhood.

4

For nights/weekends, visit the neighborhood and parking route at the hours you will actually use them.

Before you commit

Check these four things.

Confirm hospital/facility and whether rotations are part of the role.

Ask about employee parking and shift-change timing.

Test the exact route for early, evening or overnight shifts.

Map any second household job before committing to one side of the region.

Places to compare

Six places to start.

They are deliberately different so you can compare commute, housing type, walkability and space.

Three things to watch.

1

Treating SSM Health as one commute.

2

Ignoring the possibility that a healthcare role may rotate or transfer between facilities.

3

Choosing around one shift without testing nights, weekends or early-morning travel if those are part of the job.
